Climate Extremes and Global Food Supply Chains
From 5 to 10 July 2026, Dr. Johanna Hedlund from the Stockholm Environment Institute conducted a Short-Term Scientific Mission at ETH Zürich, supported by COST Action CA24163 CROSS-CASCADE. The STSM, Connecting climate impact transmission chain models with biophysical climate impact data, focused on strengthening research collaboration on how climate extremes can propagate through global food supply chains via bilateral trade flows.
During the visit, Dr. Hedlund collaborated with Prof. Sonia Seneviratne, Professor of Land-Climate Dynamics, in the context of the research project Extreme weather: effects, measures and solutions for a long-term sustainable and resilient society. The STSM enabled progress on joint research, data sharing and analysis, and provided an opportunity for Dr. Hedlund to present her work to the LandClim group.
The visit also opened broader discussions on potential scientific exchange with the newly funded NCCR Clim+ project led by Prof. Seneviratne. The research and analysis developed during the STSM will contribute to a joint paper planned for 2026/2027, examining how climate extremes may be transmitted through global food supply chains via bilateral trade flows.
Beyond the immediate research activities, the STSM helped strengthen the long-standing collaboration between the institutions and supported discussions on future activities within CROSS-CASCADE.
